Women (especially founders) face a 20% equity gap at work

Women (especially founders) face a 20% equity eu-agrarpolitik at workWomen (especially founders) face a 20% equity gap at workWe already know that there is a gender pay gap holding women back at work, but did you know that there is an equity gap too?For every dollar of equity a man holds in a company, women hold 47 cents, according to data of 180,000 employees across 6,000 companies compiled by Carta. When you get equity at a company, you earn more than a paycheck, you also get a stake in a business that can secure yur financial future. Unlike cash, equity is likely to increase in value over time. This is the bet that many early startup employees make If I work at this new idea and our company gets bought or goes public, I can one day get rich overnight. But women are missing out on this opportunity. The research found that women make up 35% of equity-holding employees, but only hold 20% of equity. The gap gets more pronounced for female founders. They only own 39 cents for every dolla r of equity a male founder earns. In total, women make up 33% of employees and founders in the workforce, but only hold 9% of equity.Women only hold 20% of the employee equity valueWhat happened to all that equity value? In response to the research, the Angels investment collective of six women suggests that the problem is a combination of factors. For one, female founders are more like to raise money at lower valuations and have to sacrifice a greater proportion of their company to investors, which dilutes their equity value. For another, women are less represented as investors - they make up 9% of venture capitalists, one study found - and are more likely to face industry bias overall. This bias creeps into decision-making. One study on Swedish venture capitalists found that investorswould be more likely to question a womansentrepreneurship knowledgethan a male entrepreneur. Men in business were more likely to get the benefit of the doubt. A male entrepreneur would get described optimistically as young and promising while a woman got the tepid response of young, but experienced. For women to get more ownership of the businesses they help build, Angels suggests that closing the capitalization table gap needs to become a priority for leaders. Their advice to founders and CEOS? Include and develop women from the beginning of a companys story. Raise money from women investors. Hire women from day one. Compensate men and women equally when in similar roles. And focus on women of color, especially URMs underrepresented minorities, in all these areas as they face even higher barriers in our industry, the group suggests.

How to Give Someone Constructive Criticism in the Workplace

How to Give Someone Constructive Criticism in the WorkplaceHow to Give Someone Constructive Criticism in the WorkplaceWhen I welches finishing up a summer internship during grad school, I was scheduled for a feedback session on the final day of work. Having worked really hard throughout the summer, I walked into the session expecting positive, or, at the very least, mixed feedback. What I received instead was my managers biased stance on why she felt certain events had happened in the past couple weeks and what this meant about my attitude. She was wrong. There were other reasons for the recent events that she hadnt considered. I felt blindsided and shocked that none of my hard work throughout the three months had been considered. I left the office that day in tears. That memory has stuck with me because I felt that a lot of the standard rules for properly delivering feedback were not followed. Feedback, I discovered that day and again after, is more effective for the recipient if the giver can remain objective and focus on communicating solutions. Here are some tips for optimally organizing and delivering constructive criticism.1.Focus on observations. Do not assume intentions. When organizing points for a feedback discussion, collect examples that support what youre communicating. However, do not surmise the motivation behind behaviors. Be open when discussing the actions with the individual, and be open to hearing the individuals rationale or personal circumstances. If you lob unfounded accusations, the other person could become hintermannschaft and stop listening.2.Tie the behavior or action to an outcome. While you should comment on the persons actions, it is more impactful if you can tie the behavior to an outcome or describe the negative impact. It provides context for the individual and also establishes that you are not attacking the person but rather critiquing how their behavior impacts others. For example, instead of telling a person that you disagree wit h the negative comments that theyve made, explain how it impacts team morale and distracts team members from overcoming obstacles and tackling work.Incidentally, tips 1 and 2 make up part of the Gordon method for delivering feedback using I-statements 1) describe the behavior you find unacceptable, 2) share your feelings and 3) identify the tangible and concrete effect of the behavior.3.Be aware of recency bias.Recency biasis the tendency to place more value on recent events because of their freshness within your memory. Consider all events regardless of when they occurred. Recency bias can occur for positive or negative behavior. If a person performs well but has a rough couple of weeks recently, you could be penalizing them unfairly. Conversely, if a person underperforms for a long span of time but more recently had major wins, you may be celebrating spurts of good work rather than sustained solid performance.4. Offer recommendations or alternatives. In addition to telling a person things that they should try to refrain from doing, offer them some suggestions of some things they should try. A person may be acting one way because they arent aware of alternatives. Give them some ideas to seed their imagination, and then encourage them to think of other, more productive ways to operate.5.Deliver feedback in person.Comments can be misconstrued when delivered over an online medium, no matter how many smiley-face emoticons you use. When possible, deliver feedback in personso that you can see their reactions and adapt what you are saying according to their verbal responses or the body language you witness. Giving feedback in real time and actively taking into account the information that you gather during the conversation allows you to adjust the course of the conversation so that it remains focused on the most important topics.Read Related ArticlesCharm Candidates With an Irresistible Company Culture

Receiving a Demotion in Rank or Job Title

Receiving a Demotion in Rank or Job TitleReceiving a Demotion in Rank or Job TitleDemotions, the compulsory lowering of an employees job rank, job title, or status, are used in a variety of ways by both organizations and employees. In the case of organizations, it can be is a disciplinary measure short of firing an employee. In a voluntary demotion, the employee adjusts his job to match the current needs of his life. An organization can provide a demotion at the choice of the organization or voluntarily, at the request of the employee, sometimes called deployment. Compulsory Demotion There are a number of reasons why an organization might compel an employee to take on a lower role. Not Management Material - Failing at the job to which the individual was promoted, like when a successful individual contributor takes on a managerial role and cant address the people issues, is just one scenario.Transitioning from Company - The employer may be parting ways with an employee and wants to provide a cushion of time to allow the employee to begin a job search. However, if a member of management staff will be leaving, the organization does not want them leading other employees or projects as they transitionout of the organization. In the case of a regular employee, the employer will allow this detaching relationship to continue as long as the employee behaves like a professional. If the employer decides that the situation is distracting to other employees, interfering with the accomplishment of work, or hurting workplace morale and employee engagement, the employer will wind down the relationship quickly. Restructuring - The organization eliminated stttes in the hierarchy in order to flatten the reporting relationships in the organization. This is frequently the outcome of an effort to empower employees and can include, in the case of a supervisor, doubling or tripling the numbers of reporting staff members. In one organization, the step between the senior manager and vice president was eliminated. This entire layer of management was laid off or demoted. This makes for tough times in an organization. The promotion funnel narrows the higher an individual goes, and this decision gave an entire generation of senior managers no promotional opportunities. The result? Heavy turnover. Financial Challenges - The organization is experiencing financial difficulties and demoting employees, thus reducing the cost of salaryand benefits can be used as an alternative to laying off employees. Voluntary Demotion Work-Life Balance - The employee may want less responsibility and fewer reporting staff members. The existing position level wont allow the changes. A new mother who wants to lower the stress she experienced as a manager decides to become an individual contributor until her children reached school age at which time she intends to pursue a management position once again.Flex-work - Employees may elect to work remotely, pursue flexible hours, or telecom mute instead of working onsite 100% of the time and the new flexible arrangement makes a particular former role unworkable. The employee wants to stay employed by his current employer so accepts a demotion which is the only available position. These changes are often location- or family-driven and a position at the current level may not work for the organization. In many cases, employees would rather accept a demotion than leave the company. Retirement - Ramping down responsibilities as retirementmay make sense depending on the situation.

The Ultimate Anti-Procrastination Hack

The Ultimate Anti-Procrastination Hack Article by Derek DoepkerEven high achievers can end up procrastinatingon important tasks when they feel overwhelmed and stressed. Although simply urging yourself to take action may sound like a good solution, its a little like telling a sad person to just cheer up. What you need instead is a specific process that works with your psychology instead of against it.When you use this ultimate anti-procrastination hack, youll bypass internal resistance and get yourself to take action almost effortlessly. Plus, it only takes about 10 seconds to implement and is virtually guaranteed to succeed when done properly. The Anti-Procrastination Hack FormulaThe formula for taking action is simple Ask yourself, Can I just insert micro-commitment here? A micro-commitment is something so small and simple that youll readily say yes to doing it, even if you have very little willpower. For instance, lets say someone has been procrastina ting cleaning his house. He can ask, Can I just take two minutes to clean my desk? On the surface, it may seem like that wont accomplish much. However, he will probably notlageice an internal shift when he steps into action.Have you ever not wanted to do something, like exercise, but once you started, you found yourself mora motivated to continue? This happens because momentum generates motivation. The trick is not waiting to get motivated. Take a small step that generates motivation, and then continue to ask yourself, Can I just do a little more? After following through ona small commitment to clean the desk, our hypothetical person may find himself thinking, Ive already started, so I may as well keep going for a little longer. Next thing you know, the entire room is clean.Lets look at how this formula can be used to conquer the four drivers of procrastination fear, overwhelm, uncertainty, and perfectionism.Overcoming FearOne way to overcome fear is through exposure therapy, which co nsists of gradually exposing yourself to things you fear in a safe environment.Imagine someone who is fearful of public speaking. They may ask, Can I just speak in my living room to a couple close friendsabouta topic I love? Since this is safe, this person can probably getherself to do it. Then, she can gradually ramp up the stakes asshe gets more comfortable Can I just invite one stranger to join my private group? Can I just introduce myself for 30 seconds at a local networking event? Can I just speak to a small group for five minutes to raise awareness for a cause Im passionate about? The key isnt to break out of your comfort zone its to stretch your comfort zone. Start with something you can do thats only mildly uncomfortable, build from there, and youll gain greater and greater confidence.Overcoming OverwhelmFeeling overwhelmed happens when you only concentrate on the big picture. While its important to dream big and find inspiration, accomplishing anything can seem daunting if t hats all you focus on. This is why many experts recommend breaking down larger goals into smaller action steps. If a person wants to improve her health and shes feeling overwhelmed by how many things she has to change, she may ask, Can I just focus this week on eating a healthier breakfast?By focusing on just one or two priorities at a time, youre more likely to make each new behavior a habit. Once something is habitual, you can add new habits without feeling overwhelmed.Overcoming UncertaintyOne thing that can fuel procrastination is not being able to focus on the next best step. But you can drive for hundreds of miles at night while only seeing whats right in front of you. Sometimes, the only way to get clarity is to take some type of action, and then use the resulting feedback for course correction. An individual who is uncertain about what career he wants to go into could ask, Can I just try one new activity this week and see what I enjoy and dont enjoy? For instance Can I just vo lunteer to mentor for an afternoon? Can I just take a cooking class? Can I just write an article on a topic I enjoy?Even though none of these may become a career, hecan gain insight whetherhe enjoys working alone or with others, whetherhe enjoys working withhis hands or prefers mental challenges, and so on. The key here is the micro-commitment isnt about making the right long-term choice.Rather, each micro-commitment is a steppingstone to greater self-awareness and clarity.Overcoming PerfectionismDoing things well is important, but its also necessary to give yourself permission to make mistakes. Like a baby learning to walk, youre not going to nail it right off the bat, and thats okay.Tim Ferriss adopted this approach when he gave himself a quota to write two crappy pages a day. This micro-commitment included both the quantity of pages (just two) and an allowance to be less than perfect. You can do the same. Ask, Can I just spend five minutes doing crappy work?Paradoxically, when you remove the pressure to be perfect, you find that, over time, you end up generating your best work. The key is to create space for creative expression that has no quality filter. Then, come back later to what you have produced with a mindset of improvement. When you apply the ultimate anti-procrastination hack, you may notice an immediate transformation, or momentum could build over several weeks or months. Either way, the key is to get started today by committing to something youre guaranteed to say yes to. All you have to do is recall the three magic words Can I just? Now, pick one thing youve been procrastinating, implement a micro-commitment that will give you momentum, and watch the magic happen as your seemingly small successes generate your biggest breakthroughs.A version of this article originally appeared on SUCCESS.com.

Brief Biographies of Great Men in Advertising

Brief Biographies of Great Men in AdvertisingBrief Biographies of Great Men in AdvertisingEvery industry has its stars, past and present, and advertising is certainly no exception. The very nature of advertising and the number of different industries it touches has resulted in some of the biggest players becoming household names. If youre new to the advertising industry, some of these people may not be familiar to you. If youre a veteran, this list will hopefully be a nice reminder of the greats who helped you get where you are today. Bill Bernbach - The Greatest Influencer Born in the Bronx in New York City on August 13th, 1911, William (Bill) Bernbach is without question the most important and influential figure in the history of modern advertising. A founding lebenspspeciesner of Doyle Dane Bernbach (DDB), he was a copywriter and creative director who changed the face of advertising, and almost every advertising agency today relies on the ideas and structure that Bill Bernbach provided. Neil French - Copywriting Legend Superstar copywriters are few and far between in the advertising industry. Neil French is at the top of a very short list (one which also includes David Abbott, Tony Brignull, Dan Weiden, Mike Lescarbeau, Luke Sullivan, Lionel Hunt and, well, anyone featured in the DAD Copy Book). Now, learn a little about a man who is still considered to be one of the best writers in the business. David Ogilvy - The Father Of Advertising There are several names in the industry that are synonymous with advertising. David Ogilvy is perhaps the most famous, and respected, of those names. Often referred to as The Father of Advertising he left behind him a legacy of astounding work, powerful agencies and several books that have become must-reads for anyone who even thinks about getting into the ad business. Steve Jobs - Best Client Ever? Born February 24th, 1955, and passing away on October 5th, 2011, Steve Jobs was a co-founder, chairman, and CEO of Apple Inc. His impact on the technology industry, entertainment, advertising, and pop culture was vast, and he leaves behind an empire that is changing the way we all live and work. While many critics say his personality was bordering on sociopathic at times, he made Apple the powerhouse company it is. Tom Carty Walter Campbell - Powerhouse Creative Team Advertising has had many superstar copywriters and art directors, but very few superstar teams. Thats not to say they dont exist we merely focus on names and not pairings. However, in the mid-1980s a team formed that created some of the most powerful, memorable and exciting commercials ever made. That team is Britains Tom Carty and Walter Campbell, and to know their work is to know that you can tread the fine line of art and advertising and still sell a whole lot of product. Sir Ridley Scott - Legendary Commercial Director Sir Ridley Scott is best known as a movie director, creating some of the powerful and important mov ies of the last 40 years. They includeBlade Runner, Alien, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down and American Gangster. However, before he directed films (his first was The Duellists, made in 1977 with Harvey Keitel and Keith Carradine), Ridley Scott was an equally important name in the world of design and TV commercials. Closing Thought - What About the Women? Now, while its easy to find articles about great men in advertising, its a little harder to find articles about great women in advertising but theyre out there. However, its fair to say that the percentages heavily favor the men. Why is that? Well, for the longest time, advertising was dominated by men. You just have to watch Mad Men to see how the roles in an agency were divided, with women doing a lot of the menial tasks, and men taking the lead on creative work and account direction. But, times did change. While it is still nowhere close to 50/50, there have been, and continue to be, some truly exceptional women who have made the ir mark. Consider the likes of Tiger Savage,Phyllis Robinson, Mary Wells, Charlotte Beers,Bernice Fitz-Gibbon,Helen Lansdowne Resor?,?and?Peggy King to name just a few.

What are your weaknesses How to talk about yourself in an interview

What are your weaknesses How to talk about yourself in an interviewWhat are your weaknesses How to talk about yourself in an interviewWhat are my weaknesses? Umm, can I phone a friend for this one?Ah, the question nobody wants to answer- and rightfully so. Who really wants to talk about their weaknesses, especially when you are trying toimpress a hiring manager?Well, lets see- I always let my vegetables rot in my fridge. Im bedrngnis the best parallel parker in the world. I constantly leave texts from my friends read but unanswered. I forgot to pay my cell phone bill on time last month. I never pair my socks.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraOh, are we talking about work weaknesses? Well, Im just a perfectionist, unless you see the inside of my cloplatzdeckchen at homeIn this article, we are exploring why hiring managers and recruiterslove this question, what they absolutely dont want to hear you say (hint they dont want to hear about how detail-oriented you are), and how you can really dazzle them with a prepared answer.WHY DO HIRING MANAGERS ASK THIS QUESTION?I hate this question. I hate thinking about weaknesses. I hate exposing them. At the same time, I see the worth in this question.Recently, I was talking to a recruiter at a successful, high-growth startup. When I asked her for her best interview advice, she referred to this specific question- and the canned answer she was hearing on a daily basis. She said, If I hear another candidate say she is soooo detail-oriented or such a perfectionist, I am going to lose it.At that moment, I made a note to write this article. Why is it such a turn-off to say Im detail-oriented- especially when I am a jungfrau and its ingrained in my personality?Heres the reason there is a much more interesting way to talk about you and (yes, even) your weaknesses. If youre saying youre bogged down in details as a sort of humbleb rag, youre likely not being honest with the interviewer- or, more importantly, with yourself. The face-to-face interview is a real opportunity to showcase who you are- more than aprinted resumeor cover letter ever could. I cant stress this enough- make it count.HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR WEAKNESSESI am a big question-asker (hey, maybe thats my weakness). My brain is alwaysandrangning a line of questionsabout every opportunity and at every problem. Thats the kind of exercise I want you to run when determining your weaknesses.Since you can pretty much bank on an interviewer asking for your weaknesses, take the time to come up with a thoughtful answer- one that is authentic and honest. Here are a few (tough) questions to ask yourself to determine your weaknessesSoft Skill WeaknessesDo my duties often fall between the cracks?Do I have a damaging internal dialogue with myself?Does my boss have to check in on my work constantly? What is my communication style? Can I make effective decisions on my own?Am I confident in my abilities?Hard Skill WeaknessesWhat is my level (1-10) of proficiency in required skill?Pro tipgo through any job posting and rate yourself on each skill. This could be a place to identify a weakness and make a plan to resolve it.Is my work proofread or checked-over by someone else? What kind of feedback do I normally receive on my work?Interpersonal WeaknessesAm I quick to offer thoughtful solutions in a pinch?Does my shyness ever get in the way of a great idea being shared?Do I pause and listen to other peoples input?Do I respond too quickly? Not quickly enough?Am I persistent enough? Too persistent?Do I take too much work on myself?Do I delegate work when it makes sense?Do I offer feedback to my team?Is my feedback too negative?TELL A STORY ABOUT YOUR WEAKNESSESGuess what? Its story timeNow that you have determined your weakness, think back to a time where youreally came up against it- specifically in the workplace. Just like your resume shouldnt be a list of unquantifiable duties and tasks, your weaknesses shouldnt be presented as a static shadow in the corner that follows you everywhere.Everybody- and I mean everybody- loves a good story. I think that, in the job-hunting process, wherever you can infuse a story, do it. Stories are more compelling than a list of skills, achievements, and experiences.Think of a time where your weakness really shone through- and tell the story. If you arevery self-critical, maybe it was not speaking up about an idea you had during a critical project. Instead of speaking up during a planning meeting, maybe you sat back with that little imposter on your back saying No, thats a dumb idea. Be quiet. Not to therapize, but how did it make you feel to see the completed project without your input? Could the outcome have been more successful if you had thrust the negativity aside? What did you learn at that moment?Maybe your weaknesses arent really weaknesses at all. Maybe they are inexperienced in disguise. Fo r example, if you are going out for your first management position, yourinexperience in managementmight be your weakness. Be upfront about it. Here is where you can flex the art of the humblebrag. Instead of admitting that youve never held a management position, think back to a job where you did step in as a manager- and you hit it out of the park.HOW TO MAKE A PLAN TO WORK ON YOUR WEAKNESSESYou know how they say that the first step in fixing something is recognizing it exists? In answering this question, you can both present the problem and create a solution. Not all weaknesses are in thesoft skills sector, either. If you are interviewing for a job that requires a set of hard skillslike coding or fluency in a specific software suite- be upfront about that. The story you build around this can be more triumphant. Tell the hiring manager, for example, about how you learned to use Adobe Illustrator to complete a specific project. The best way to recover your rep when you lose your cool at work

The best way to recover your rep when you lose your cool at work The best way to recover your rep when you lose your cool at work It wasn’t quite as bad as Joan Crawford’s “Mommy Dearest” breakdown with her daughter, but I’m not so sure my coworker didn’t feel the same way that little girl did when I pulled her aside and raked her over the coals for a project that did not meet my expectations.Let’s face it. We all get stressed. We all get emotional. Sometimes those feelings are tied to events in the workplace, and sometimes those feelings have everything to do with what’s going on elsewhere in our lives. While most of us try and manage our stress or upset feelings with exercise, good music, diversion tactics and more, it is only human to have those feelings bubble up to the surface. And when they do, it is often difficult to manage how they will “leak” out. For some, it may be tears. For others, like me, it comes out as anger.I’m sure I am not the only woman to lose her cool at work. Objectively, I know that emotional outbursts impact the culture of the office. That said, who hasn’t “l ost it” at work at some point? Unfortunately, even one fit of rage can damage your reputation. Here are four steps to take to repair your street cred with coworkers if you do lose your cool.1. ApologizeTake responsibility for your behavior and say you are sorry, without pointing the finger at anyone but yourself and without expecting an apology in return. Owning your own behavior in an emotionally charged situation can go a long way in repairing relationships.2. Show remorseTrue remorse is more than an apology. Take time to reflect on what happened and why it happened. Then, communicate your regret for the situation and your commitment to avoiding a similar outburst in the future.3. Attempt to repairIn the heat of the moment, we often say things we don’t mean. Look for opportunities to regain that person’s trust and rebuild their faith that you won’t get angry like that again. People tend to be more forgiving if it’s an isolated incident. On the other hand, if you find you rself confronting these types of situations on a routine basis, it might be time to seek outside assistance.4. Do not repeatNot repeating the behavior is the best way to repair the long-term relationship. Work to re-establish your reputation as a confident, calm professional who is able to constructively manage potential breakdowns.Work outbursts are unfortunate. They hurt everyone involved. Understand that it takes time for wounds to heal. Don’t be so quick to send flowers or make a call for happy hour on you â€" a more meaningful apology, concerted efforts to repair the situation, and displaying behavior appropriate in the workplace will lead to healthier relationships in the future.Tiffany Couch is the CEO and founder of Acuity Forensics, a forensic accounting and fraud investigation firm that helps unravel complex financial crimes.A version of this post previously appeared on  Fairygodboss, the largest career community that helps women get the inside scoop on pay, corporate cu lture, benefits, and work flexibility. Are You Qualified for the Job -- The Resume Place

Are You Qualified for the Job -- The Resume Place Are You Qualified for the Job The Resume Place Are You Qualified for the Job? The Quickest Way to Get the Answer One of my favorite USAJOBS “tricks of the trade”- and a much over-looked resource by most federal jobseekers- is reading the questionnaire of a vacancy announcement. Novice jobseekers often try to analyze the job announcement narrative to figure out whether or not they qualify for the job. Actually, the answer is quite clear if you click on the magic link buried deep into the announcement that says “View Occupational Questionnaire” or “View Assessment Questions.” It’s like getting lost in the woods and suddenly finding the map that will get you back out. The questionnaire is a clear guide of exactly what the Human Resources (HR) Specialist needs to find in a candidate. It’s numbered like a well-organized checklist. Many questions are simply yes / no or A/B/C/D/E for quick review and evaluation. There are generally two types of questions in the questionnaires: questions about the basic qualifications of the job, and questions regarding the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant. Meeting the Basic Requirements The first cut is obviously whether or not you meet the basic requirements. These questions are usually quite straightforward: A requirement for this position is that you must have education and experience in environmental engineering and/or geology in order to provide expertise in soil and groundwater contamination evaluation Yes I have environmental engineering and/or geology experience No I do not have experience in environmental engineering or geology. Determining How Qualified You Are Next, the HR Specialist must sort out whether you are Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or simply Qualified by evaluating your level of the knowledge, skills, and abilities relating to the job. Here is where things get a little trickier, because the questions will usually involve a self-rating scale similar to this example: For each of the following tasks, choose the statement from below that best describes your experience as listed below. A- I know little or nothing about this. B- I have had study or training in this. C- I have used my knowledge or ability, but I have been closely supervised. D- I have used my knowledge or ability on my own, under normal supervision. E- I am consulted by other journeypersons in difficult situations, or I am called on to do unusually difficult jobs. Thorough knowledge of visual arts, videographic, and photographic methods and?techniques and the subject matter supported or depicted to plan visual products and services that interpret subject matter content. Knowledge of the subject matter program area to develop original designs, concepts, or visual styles for publications, exhibits, or presentation material that present to the public the ideas of image desired, evoke certain viewer responses, or reduce the cost of production, installation, or maintenance of the visual product. Ability to plan and carry out visual arts projects, resolving most conflicts that?arise, integrating and coordinating the work of others, and interpreting policies. Ability to develop specific ideas on the appearance and contents of the product (e.g., specific photos, videos, illustrations, typography, color scheme, or number of views to be illustrated). In order to apply for a job successfully, you must hit the mark of BEST QUALIFIED. How do you hit that mark? You need to score the highest rating (E in the example above) for at least 85-90% of the questions in this section! If you read the announcement and decide that you cannot achieve that score, then move on to another job announcement for which you are better qualified. If you are trying to get into a government position for the first time, or change fields within the federal government, look for those job announcements that are more “generalist” and not requiring specific skills and knowledge beyond your experience and education. A Few More Words to the Wise About Questionnaires Don’t deflate your questionnaire answers!  Give yourself all the credit that you can. Read how Finally, make sure your resume supports your questionnaire answers. The HR Specialist will cross check your resume to see if you answered the questionnaire accurately and correctly. Use  the keywords from the questionnaire in your outline format federal resume. Read more about the outline format So, the common sense tip for your federal job search is:  Check the questionnaire to help you decide whether or not to apply. Finding Internship Opportunities at KPMG

Finding Internship Opportunities at KPMG Finding Internship Opportunities at KPMG KPMG is widely known as one of the Big Four Accounting Firms in the United States. On a consistent basis, KPMG has ranked as one of the top Fortune 100 companies to work for. KPMG Internships KPMG Internship Program is geared towards providing ongoing training as a foundation of the overall program. Interns begin their internship with a week of technical and soft skills training and then move on to participate in a number of structured programs that provides them with a true understanding of what employees at KPMG actually do. Interns may also decide to apply to the global internship program where they will spend four weeks on assignment at an international KPMG office. Benefits KPMG offers interns a very impressive hourly salary while interning at the company. Since 80% of full-time KPMG employees come from their internship program, there̢۪s an excellent chance of getting hired once an internship is completed. Interns also get an opportunity to participate in KPMG̢۪s Interns for Literacy Program which works to donate books to underprivileged children. Qualifications KPMG seeks candidates possessing good technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and commercial focus. For the global internship programs, they may have some language proficiency requirements as well. Locations KPMG offers internships across the country. There are also a wide variety of locations for students interested in participating in the Global Internship Program. KPMG̢۪s Global Internship Program The selection process for the www.kpmgcampus.com Global Internship Program (GIP) is very competitive and the company seeks to find candidates who they believe will fair well in an international environment, who may have already had an opportunity to complete an international experience on their own, and find out more about what motivates each candidate for wanting to do an international internship. Those interested in the global internship program also get their lodging and airfare paid for by the company. Opportunities for the global program exist in tax, audit, and advisory. KPMG recruits from various college campuses throughout the year. You can check with the Career Services Office at your college to see if they will be recruiting at your school. Other ways to get in touch with a KPMG representative is to perhaps schedule an informational interview with an employee of the company (maybe your school has an alum working at the company) or check for potential contacts via social networking sites, such as LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook. When interviewing for a global internship, applicants will get a chance to make a positive personal impression and provide information that will help the company to select an international location that may be best for each participating intern. Signs You Should Consider a Voluntary Demotion

Signs You Should Consider a Voluntary Demotion Signs You Should Consider a Voluntary Demotion The prospect of demotion is a scary one. What will people think? Would I ever be promoted again? Can I live on less money? Sometimes a voluntary demotion is the best thing someone can do personally and professionally. While it isn̢۪t always the answer to a tough time at work, there are situations where employees should consider taking a step down the hierarchy. The Work-Life Balance Is Unbearable As you rise through the ranks of a government organization, you have to spend more time working late and attending work-related functions. It just goes with the territory. A city lifeguard clocks out at the end of a shift and doesn̢۪t have to think about work until the start of the next shift. The city manager, on the other hand, has city council meetings, emergencies and community events that often happen outside of normal business hours. City staffers at the various management levels have time commitments along the continuum between the lifeguard and city manager that coincide with those staffers̢۪ places on the organizational chart. At some point along the way to the top, some people find the time demands of upper-level jobs not worth the trade-offs in their personal lives. These time demands can be perceived by people at lower levels of the organization, but you can̢۪t really know how those demands will affect you until you̢۪re living through them. If you find yourself constantly sacrificing personal events for working late or making an appearance at a function you don̢۪t really want to attend, you may have reached an untenable work-life balance. If you can̢۪t stand it any longer, you may want to consider a voluntary demotion. Youre a Poor Fit with the Higher Level Position Sometimes you think you̢۪re ready to take the next level job, but once you get there, you find that it exposes your weaknesses. You were a stellar performer at your old job, but this is a whole new set of responsibilities. Sure, your experience is helpful, but the new job is different. A poor fit with a higher level position happens often when people promote from individual contributor positions to management positions. Individual contributors have to work with other people, but communication challenges take on different characteristics when supervision is involved. Individual contributors may feel like their only way to advance their careers is to take on management responsibilities. That̢۪s one way to advance, but there are other ways to grow professionally like taking on more advanced tasks or exploring opportunities in a related area of the organization. If you feel your talents are put to better use at your old job, you may want to consider going back to that old role or finding a different role that more aligns with your talents. You Had More Fun at a Lower Level Job While your talents may translate to the next level, perhaps you aren̢۪t having as much fun as you did in your old job. Some people love the challenge of managing at higher levels in an organization, but others don̢۪t. Perhaps frontline supervision or an individual contributor role is more fun for you than managing wider and wider arrays of functions. If you were significantly happier in your old job, you may want to look into a voluntary demotion. You can̢۪t spend your life in a job you don̢۪t like. Stress-related Health Issues The most important asset you have in your career is your health. Without it, you can̢۪t do anything. Twelve-hour days and sleepless nights eventually catch up to you. You can maintain this schedule a short time, but you have to crash at some point. It doesn̢۪t have to be time demands that get to you. Poor performance can cause severe anxiety, especially for people who are used to exceeding expectations. If you find yourself experiencing stress-related health problems, you probably have a job that is unhealthy for you to hold. Better to get out now before a heart attack takes you out later.

How to Find the Right Internship

How to Find the Right Internship How to Find the Right Internship Getting a paid internship over the summer is the dream of many college students, but it doesn̢۪t have to be just wishful thinking if you take the right approach, engage in some networking, and start your search early. In addition to paid internships, you may want to look into ways to fund your internship (check your college̢۪s career services office, various organizations, and foundations). Some students are able to do an unpaid internship in their field of interest by supplementing their internship with a part-time job. Defining a Good Internship Good, successful internships typically offer benefits such as the following: Teaches the basic knowledge and skills required to get hired for a full-time job (either in the company where you interned or by one of its competitors)Provides experiences that will positively enhance your resumeHelps you develop professional networking contacts that can assist you in your future job search Speak with academic advisors, school career counselors, and professors to discover which companies in your target industry offer worthwhile internships where youll receive real, value-added experience. Prospecting for Internships Some of the best internships are landed as a result of prospecting. This means identifying companies or organizations that you want to work for and contacting them directly which can result in some of the best internships around for a number of reasons: By identifying companies that dont actually advertise their internships, you will avoid competing with thousands of other applicants who also found the internship listing online. When contacting a company directly, you will often get an opportunity to help create the type of experience you are seeking and may be allowed to have some input into what the internship involves. For students from smaller cities and towns, prospecting is often the only way to find potential internships. It̢۪s important to follow some simple strategies in order to increase your chances of landing the internships of your dreams. Of course, the career field or industry you are pursuing will largely determine if paid internships are available. Even with prospecting, theres no guarantee that students will be able to land a paid internship. Employers have seen a significant rise in the number of students seeking internships. Part of this increase is due to the fact that more students are realizing that employers are looking for students with relevant experience required to hire on for future full-time jobs. Another reason a number of seniors (and post-graduates) are also interested in finding an internship is that they currently cannot find a job in their area of interest. In a 2018 study that analyzed the resumes of four million college graduates, the results showed that over 40 percent of new graduates had taken entry-level jobs that didnt require a college degree, and one out of five students were still working non-degree-requiring jobs 10 years later.Employers have become increasingly demanding, and they expect college graduates to come on board with specific skill sets and experience that the candidates have acquired during internships or through other means. Paid Internships and Programs According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE)s 2019 Internship Co-op Report, the average hourly wage for an intern is $19.05 in 2019. Many companies hire interns as a way of previewing them to see if they would fit as full-time employees, and about 56 percent of interns were converted to full-time hires. The good news for employers is that over 70 percent of interns who were hired on as full-time workers were still at the company one year later. Whether you take a paid or unpaid internship matters to potential employers. According to the NACE 2019 study, 66.4 percent of 2019 graduates who had worked paid internships received at least one job offer. This contrasts with only 43.7 percent of unpaid interns receiving at least one job offer. If youre looking for an internship that pays well, youll have the best luck with companies in the technology industry. Glassdoor.coms annual survey of highest-paying internships shows that in 2019, Facebook is paying interns the highest salary at $8,000 per month, and Amazon is second at $7,725. Other companies high on the list include Google, Microsoft, Bloomberg, Capital One, and Apple. You can also pay a fee to participate in an internship program that includes an interview and resume coaching, guaranteed placement, and a choice of domestic or international locations. Some of these internship programs also offer excellent salaries, although the upfront fees are often expensive and required in order to participate in the program. In general, it pays to be wary of programs with fees, but for the right student who can afford to pay a fee for their internship, some excellent opportunities exist in specific industries and career fields, and you can find them through companies that match you with internship opportunities based on certain characteristics. The fee you pay is considered a sort of tuition, and the program resembles a semester-abroad type of program. Choose the city and industry in which you want to have your internship, and the company guarantees placement in a top-quality internship. Examples of Paid Internship Program Companies The Institute for the International Education of Students (IES Abroad) has been around for over 60 years, bringing its first group of students to study abroad in Vienna, Austria in 1950. Today, the company offers internships abroad for full-time summer placement, full-time semester internships, or part-time programs. While these internships come with guaranteed placement in your industry of interest, they are non-paid. Some programs may be eligible for financial aid or scholarships to cover the costs of program fees, room and board.Dream Careers was founded in February 2000 to help students enhance their academic experience by offering competitive internships at both college and high school levels. The company operates in 11 cities across the globe, working with about 5,000 different employers, and has served more than 17,000 students looking to develop their career ambitions.Another similar company is The Washington Center for Internships, which is an independent, non-profit organiz ation that provides immersive internships and seminars to college-level students and young professionals. The company operates in the U.S. and has offices in 25 other countries. It helps students find internships in public, private and non-profit sectors, in a wide variety of fields including law, medicine, journalism, business, and politics, among others. Helpful Tips for Students Some statistics say that up to 80 percent of job opportunities, including internships, are never advertised, and instead, get filled through personal networks and referrals. It pays to talk to anyone and everyone who might have some sort of connection to your target industry or internship. You can also take other steps to uncover leads to potential internships: Network with family, friends, acquaintances, previous employers, faculty, and your college̢۪s alumni to seek out people who are currently doing the type of work you want to do. You never know who your parents know until you ask, or if you have well-connected neighbors in your target industry.Volunteer experiences and part-time jobs can often turn into full-time jobs after graduation.Research organizations so you can include that information in your cover letter or introduction email as you reach out to employers through websites or when prospecting for internships online. Create well-crafted, targeted resumes and cover letters that focus on the organization and position to which you are applying. Keep in mind that just one typo can put you out of the running.Have a methodical process to log your interviews, and set dates to follow-up with employers via email or phone. Don̢۪t forget the importance of thank notes in the interviewing process. Oftentimes students feel that they are being a pest but many companies see this behavior as gauging a motivated student as well as someone who really wants to come and work for their particular company.

Clean Water Sanitation Come Honduras

Clean Water Sanitation Come Honduras Clean Water Sanitation Come Honduras A four-year effort to bring water and sanitation to some 350,000 people in a remote district of Honduras is wrapping up, and medical tests show the $4.7-million effort has dramatically reduced the incidence of water-borne illnesses and parasites. Project SafeWater Colon includes the design and construction of 229 projects to bring water and sanitation to the Honduran District of Colon, including construction of some 15,000 latrines. George Green IV, vice president of Water Missions International (WMI), a nonprofit, faith-based engineering organization that managed the project, says virtually everyone in the poverty-stricken district now has access to clean water and sanitation. That wasnt the situation in 2006 when the Pentair Foundation donated $4.7 million to provide basic services through Project SafeWater. At that time, the Honduran government reported 34% of the districts people lacked access to safe drinking water and 43% lacked proper sanitation. Independent testing found those numbers dramatically low, reporting that 100% of the Colons population lacked a source of clean drinking water. Virtually every water source had high counts of coliform bacteria, indicating fecal contamination. Microenterprise Working with Pentair, WMI utilized its Living Water Treatment System, a safe drinking water package that uses filtration and chemical disinfection to produce clean drinking water. It operates on solar energy, and produces 1,000 gallons of water for less than 75 cents, says Green IV. The systems filters are designed to be back-washed, eliminating replacement costs, and chlorine for disinfection is commonly available and reasonably priced, he says. Community-based enterprise supports clean water system. To keep the systems sustainable beyond Pentairs donation, WMI also introduced a microenterprise business model, where the local community obtains ownership of the system and users pay a nominal price for potable water. The fee is established by the community. Once operating, WMI says the system costs pennies per person per day to operate. Ensuring success required WMI to conduct a series of educational programs throughout Colon to heighten awareness of the connection between good hygiene practices, health, and the importance of safe, clean drinking water. Its been a huge project, says Green IV. Everyone understands that people need clean, safe water to live. The issue becomes proving that a viable, sustainable and cost-effective solution can be provided where its desperately needed, and we have done that, says Randall J. Hogan, chairman and chief executive officer of Pentair. The results of the Project Safewater-Colon study show that for an investment of only pennies a day per person, we can ensure that people have access to safe drinking water in regions where they dont have it now. Improved Sanitation WMI, which operates in eight countries around the globe, increased its in-country staff to 20 employees to handle the project. They went into the villages and, in what perhaps became the programs biggest effort, improved on the design of local outhouses and latrines and installed upward of 15,000 toilets throughout the region. We developed a prototype design, says Green IV. We build a robust and durable structure. The districts latrines were of the type seen everywhere: a pit fitted with a wooden bench and seat. A typical structure of wood, sticks and palm fronds provides privacy. WMIs solution, called the Healthy Latrine, still is basically a pit-type latrine but uses a standard flush toilet, without the tank, making it cleaner and healthier than a standard pit design. It is built outside the house of a family, using a stone-lined 8-foot-deep pit covered by a 4-inch-thick, 4.5-ft x 4.5-ft poured concrete slab and a 2-inch floor slab. The toilet is fixed with a 3-inch PVC waste pipe and a smaller diameter PVC pipe provides venting. The waste pipe connecting the toilet to the pit is 5 feet long and fitted with a tee or 90 elbow at the pit to prevent waste from directly hitting the pit walls. The structure is made from fiber-reinforced concrete and the walls have windows for ventilation. Green IV says WMI simply was not impressed with the governments standard latrine design, which called for a concrete block structure but cost $400 to build. Being engineers, we love a challenge, says Green IV. So we came up with the idea of making a mold. WMI supplies families with aluminum molds fitted together to make a form for the structure. After cleaning and lubricating with vegetable oil, family members erect the form, mix concrete and pour the mix into the frame. The concrete must cure for about 20 hours before the frame can be broken apart and used for the next latrine. WMI says the structure should last for about 30 years and can accommodate expansion. We wanted something to last and we wanted to bring the cost down, says Green IV. The WMI design knocked costs down by half from the governments design, he says. They were shocked that wed be able to build a latrine for $200, he adds. The design improves sanitation simply because it incorporates a toilet that, despite not having any running water, flushes. As part of the sanitation education program, family members are taught to bring a bucket of clean water into the latrine, wash their hands after use, and then flush the toilet with water poured from the bucket. The project has been an overwhelming success based studies done in 2010 after some 10,000 new latrines had been built. The work showed an 80% improvement in the number of people tested for parasites and a 50% decline in the number of diarrhea disease cases reported to local health clinics. WMI also is using its latrine design in Peru and Haiti. We wanted something to last and we wanted to bring the cost down. They were shocked that we'd be able to build a latrine for $200.George Green IV, VP, Water Missions International

Protecting Power Plants from Blackouts

Protecting Power Plants from Blackouts Protecting Power Plants from Blackouts Protecting Power Plants from Blackouts A recently signed formal agreement between Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) and the University of Idaho is facilitating a research project designed to determine generator model parameters at power plants while the system is operating. Currently, the only method to determine parameters is implemented when the system is offline, and that makes it difficult to recreate real-world conditions, and thus, results are not as reliable as needed. The research is expected to enable operators to more accurately plan and react to disturbances on the power grid. Led by University of Idaho Engineering Professor Brian Johnson, whose interests and work include power electronic applications for the control of power transmission and distribution systems, the two-year research project could ultimately lead to the prevention of brownouts and blackouts or at least much fewer of them. The project is sponsored by SEL, which manufactures power protection systems. System planners will have a better prediction of how the system is going to respond, Johnson says. By getting a better model of the machines, they can better predict whether the system is close to the edge of stability or whether they have a big margin. Machine manufacturers typically provide most, if not all, of the parameters at the time of manufacture, but these are not always validated, and some of the parameters vary over time. It was learned from major blackouts starting in the 1990s that the causes were often triggered by a small event or sequence of small events that build up to big problems. Johnson notes that investment in building power transmission and generation infrastructure that had been growing through the 1970s practically stopped after that because permission to install new lines took a long time. Because system modeling and the ability to determine a systems stability was more limited before then, systems had been generally overbuilt to compensate. That extra margin allowed for additional electrical load over the next couple of decades but by the 1990s, much of the margin had been used up, and a series of widespread power failures occurred in the West and, subsequently, in other parts of the country as well. The New York skyline with half the city in blackout due to a power failure during Hurricane Sandy. Image: David Shankbone / Wikimedia Commons One of the biggest happened on the afternoon of Aug. 10, 1996. According to the Northwest Power and Conservation Council, a power line sagged into trees just southwest of Portland, OR, during a period of high temperatures and high demand for electricity. It wasnt the only power line in the area to fail. Within two hours, five power lines in Oregon and nearby Washington short-circuited and 13 hydroturbines at McNary Dam about 190 miles away also ceased operation. These events triggered power outages that affected millions of customers for up to six hours from Canada to Baja California, Mexico. In a follow-up study, one issue that stood out was that the models of some of the equipment werent good enough, and plant operators did not know how close the systems were to failure. It took several years to collect the data for the study because most of the event data from various recorders of the equipment wasnt time synchronized. Then, when the sequence of events was recreated exactly with the simulation models, the system was stable. Since the real system had had failures, researchers concluded that there were problems with the models. Despite understanding the problem and the call for utilities to update models for all their generators, a lot has not been done super well, Johnson, says, adding, however, that they have probably done as much as they could. He says there have been few consultants who really understand what needs to be done. Equipment hasnt been widely available and development costs probably couldnt have been recouped discouraging further work, he adds. He believes that could change with a positive outcome for his project and that SEL is likely interested in adding such monitoring to its existing products. Some of the information required is already being collected by SEL equipment. By doing some additional calculations and using new data in combination with what is already being monitored could greatly improve reliability, he said. Johnson acknowledges that coming up with a set of equations to calculate the parameters is still going to be a challenge. But within the two-year research-phase of the project, he is hopeful that the algorithms will be developed, validated, and ready to pass along to SEL, which may need an additional couple of years of engineering before being ready to go online. Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer. Learn more about the latest energy technologies at ASMEs Power and Energy 2015. For Further Discussion By getting a better model of the machines, [power plant operators] can better predict whether the system is close to the edge of stability or whether they have a big margin. Its not you Why no ones reading your resume

It's not you Why no one's reading your resume It's not you Why no one's reading your resume By now, you’ve rewritten your resume more times than you can count. You’ve labored over every word and formatted it within an inch of its life. Blogs with titles like “Jumpstart your Job Search with 5 Resume Tips!” and “4 Foolproof Ways to Get a Recruiter’s Attention!” dominate your bookmarks. You’ve shown it to your friends, your mom, a few trusted colleagues, and that HR manager you dated a while back. Everyone agrees: you look great on paper. So Why Don’t They Call? One likely answer is that your resume â€" at least the resume as you know it â€" rarely makes it to a human reader. The problem starts with that shiny “Upload A Resume” button. It looks promising, but don’t be deceived: this button is the doorway into a void, a purgatory of waiting, wondering, and never hearing back. This abyss has a name, and it’s “ATS.” After you upload your resume (and spend the rest of the day staring into your empty inbox), an Applicant Tracking System immediately disassembles your masterpiece and presents you to a prospective employer as just one row in a list of applicants sorted by keywords and job titles. Users then cruise the assembled applicants, searching for candidates worth a further look. If it sounds a lot like online dating, that’s because it is. These systems present recruiters and hiring managers with assumed matches, usually based on predetermined criteria like the presence of certain keywords on the resume. Some systems even screen out applicants automatically before a human end-user is ever involved. Before the problem solver in you grudgingly admits that this sounds like a solid workflow management system, read on. The Future is Here. And it Doesn’t Quite Work. Most major companies use an ATS of some sort. But despite their pervasiveness, Applicant Tracking Systems are maddeningly ineffective at doing what they’re designed to do: pairing employers with the right candidates. They’re so ineffective that the Wall Street Journal recently devoted not one but two pieces to the problem of getting the right resumes into recruiters’ hands. WSJ’s Lauren Weber notes that even though jobseekers and recruiters alike find the systems frustrating, companies are expected to spend $5.75 billion on online recruitment tools and services in 2012. This is great news for job boards, but the truth is that the technology is still very young and still very flawed. While some services try to mitigate the ATS black hole by using detailed profile systems rather than simple resume parsing, the end result is ultimately the same: resumes are disassembled and sorted into searchable pieces. Recruiters and hiring managers must still comb through lists of criteria before deciding to view an individual applicant’s details. Four Tips for Getting Noticed in an ATS Now that you know what’s on the other side of the looking glass, you can start to do something about it. While there are countless Applicant Tracking Systems available, some key criteria remains constant. Start here: Have a Second Resume. You can keep your brilliantly formatted resume for email attachments and personal networking, but keep a simple.txt file on hand for online applications. Dress It Down. That.txt file needs to be as simple as possible. If your resume contains advanced formatting components like boxes, borders, tables, or images, pull them out. Text only. Name Your Sections. While your “real” resume might not contain section headings, your ATS-ready version should. Don’t be creative here. Use common headings like “Experience,” “Professional Experience,” and “Education.” ATS systems look for these headings and break your resume down accordingly. Understand Search. Populate your resume with keywords that fit each job posting. Don’t just dump a keyword section into your existing resume â€" do the work and make the keywords integrate seamlessly with your skills and experience. The desired skills listed in the job posting are good indicators of what keywords the recruiter or hiring manager will be searching for. So how can foolproof your resume to make it to the top of a recruiter’s list? The answer is that you can’t. Like so many other components of the job search, the needs of the organization and the opinions of the reader will control much of your resume’s success or failure. However, the steps above are a fine start toward getting your resume noticed in almost all ATS systems. Do your research and put in the work before you hit “Submit.” Next time, the void may answer back.
